Isle of Man Potato record falls!

It’s not official yet but plenty of sites are reporting Mr K Sloan from the isle of Man’s 3.5kg potato record is about to be smashed by a Lebanese record potato weighing over 11kg!

The Isle of Man’s largest potato was bought by Green’s restaurant over 10 years ago when it was crowned world record spud. BBC website rumours it may come out on display soon!!!

Sad day but unofficial as yet. It looks nothing like a potato to be honest and I think this alone is enough to discount its entry. How the Isle of Man didn’t make more of this world record entry?? What other world records lurk around the Isle of Man?

For pie lovers everywhere

Following Rhumsaa’s inaugural cooking of the Jamju pie it was my turn to test the recipe dreamt up on a highly creative day in the office. All I can say is wow. It would be stupid to try and explain how good this pie is. Just wow. Life is different now.

Balti take away, eat in or Birmingham???

Dilema hit tonight as we can’t choose whether to go out for a Curry on Friday, get a take away in and watch Friday Night Fight Night or jump on a boat and drive down to Birmingham for the real deal.

Up until our last trip back I’ve never thought there was much difference between a Brum Balti and a Manx Balti but Don has always insisted you can’t beat one from the true home of Balti. Last trip back we had a take away from Balti Castle in Weolley Square and it was far and away the best Balti I’ve ever had. It has to be said almost worth the £200 odd trip in itself!

Fatty friday comes early!

Usually wait until Friday to be a bit indulgent but this week hs been a nightmare from the start. Stared getting healthy food again, buying free range chicken etc etc but negated any benefits by eating three times as much because it all tasted so good! Top that off with the fact that today the healthy eating went out the window and I bought £4.73 of Pick and Mix and nearly got through it all with the help of a couple others at work and then had about a whole Pizza tonight.

The old man always said I’d be a big man when I filled out and I can’t help but feel this week has gone a long way towards that. Diet starts Monday. Heading back to Brum I’m sure we’ll do a curry at some point.

Manx Lamb for Valentines Day

I’m all set to put on my chefs hat for our Valentine’s Meal tonight. Rather than go out on a school night we’ve decided to stay in and I’m going to cook the Lamb we got from Glendown Farm for working on their self catering holiday cottage website for The Stable. Planning on doing a healthy grilling recipe I found with the Lamb coated in ground Cumin and a couple other herbs. Not sure yet what to accompany the Lamb with, maybe a bit of cheesy mash or a bed of rice. mmmmmmm…

Spanish Tapas in the Isle of Man

Woken up this morning with the distinct smell of Garlic as the reminder of our meal out at Tapas Cordoba up at Port Jack. I’ve been to a couple other Tapas places on the Isle of Man but this one has to be my favourite by a long way.We just had two course of dishes including spanish omelette, prawns in a chilli oil, potato salad, meatballs, posh hams on toasts (I think that’s the Spanish name..), garlic and olives, Anchovies, Chicken somethingorother and a couple of other dishes that I can’t remember.  To finish I had Creme Brulee which was excellent. anywhere that does a good cremem brulee is going to be pretty high up on my list of restaurants! The atmosphere up there is always authentic and relaxing. Wouldn’t be a good option if you didn’t have the time to sit and enjoy the food and the company but for us an ideal Saturday night out.

Isle of Man restaurant with local food!

Got in a bit of a habit recently of going out for lunch every day. Not a bad thing but the pennies add up. We go to Java cafe a fair bit so decided for a change to try Driftwood Cafe. I think it’s David Buttery who used to have Tanroagan’s that’s got it and the food was fantastic. Really good homemade food and local! I had Cod and Haddock fish cakes with homemade chips and Don had Thai fishcakes.

The place is really nicely done out and I can imagine it would be a great place to take clients or people visiting the Isle of Man.
